UNIT 3: Presenting research results

Notes for my Go Animate Presentation
  • Title page- Presenting Findings By Olivia Spalter
  • Introduction-
  • The purpose of my research was to....
  • I used a different range of research methods such as primary and secondary research. I used quantitate as well as qualitative to gain a wider set of data. I went on to produce a questionnaire for my target audience to fill in.
  • By using a whole range of different research methods I was able to successful complete the aims of the assignment by carrying a whole range of data about music videos, digipaks and  magazine album covers.
  • All this information will help when producing my own music video, digipak and magazine album covers as I will focus on what my target audience liked and what they didn't and make sure I incorporate those aspects into my music video and accompanying documents.
  • Task 1-
  • In Task 1 I looked into the viewing figures on music videos online and I gained a lot of knowledge about the different types of music videos that were more popular than others and which genres are the most popular. The next slides are a few statistics that I found out...
  • (in a graph) The average YouTube views per video- 8,332
  • (in a graph) The top 2 most viewed YouTube categories- Entertainment category, How-to and Style
  • (in a graph) The most viewed YouTube videos- 'See You Again'
  • All this information helped me because I can see the type of music videos that are popular therefore I will try to use different aspects of them in my own music video. I will ensure I don't copy existing artists music videos however, I can use similar aspects of the video which stood out and made the video memorable.
  • Task 1B-
  • I decided to use qualitative research to find out peoples views and attitudes towards music videos, digipaks and magazine album covers. I looked at reviews, responses and fan views from people who have purchased one of the three. This helped as I got an idea of customer feedback and what they thought of the products.
  • I found out that on an average 2/3 comments were positive on a music video.
  • Task 2-
  • We worked within a group to produce a questionnaire for our quantitative research. 23 people took part in this questionnaire which means we got a wide range of answers which will really help us because this provides us with accurate and relevant information. Examples of some of the things we found out from our questionnaire is that....
  • The majority of people (17/23) watched Rihanna's music videos over other artists.
  • The majority of people (10/23) said that 'lyrics' is the most important feature in a digipak.
  • This information is useful because we can use it to know what to include in our music video, digipak and magazine album cover.
  • One question we asked was "Which Artist's Music Video's Do You Watch The Most?" and 17 people out of 23 answered Rihanna. This has helped in order to understand that people do watch Rihanna's video and she is an extremely popular and role model to her target audience. A question asked for a digipak was "What Is The Most Important Feature Found In A Digipak" and the response we got was that 10 people said 'Lyrics' were the most important feature and the feature that most people look at when buying a digipak which is useful information to know.
  • Task 3-
  • Me and my partner used quantitative research to find numerical answers with statistics and rankings. This research is useful because its easy and clear to read.
  • The research is accurate and factual which means the information is straightforward and straight to the point.
  • We had to find already existing information however, the information that is already out there wasn't made specifically for a purpose therefore it isn't specific to our needs.
  • Task 4-
  • Task 5-
  • We decided that Rihannas target audience- 13-25.
  • In our research we asked people who fit Rihanna's target audience.
  • We looked a psychographics and demographic tables to help propose Rihann's target audience.
  • We produced an audience profile for one of Rihanna's target audience including aspects such as their income, work status, relationship status, age, marital status etc.
  • This helped because it allowed us to find the appropriate target audience for Rihanna
  • However, the demographic and psychographic table may not be 100% accurate because they are very vague and aren't specific, they are general tables.
  • Task 6-
  • I produced a competitor analysis and textual analysis for Rihanna
  • This allowed me to gain a proper understanding and a lot more knowledge about Rihanna and her competition in the music industry.
  • She has several competitors although her biggest is Beyonce and Ariana Grande.
  • The textual analysis allowed me to understand the similarities and differences of Rihanna music videos, digipaks and magazine album adverts compared to her competitors.
  • Market research may not have been that useful as Rihanna and her competitors have different themes which may make it not accurate or comparable.
  • Task 7-
  • I had to find out different prices, resources and uses for different aspects of a music video, digipak and a magazine album advert.
  • This was challenging because there are a lot of different resources needed for each product as well as finding out all the appropriate prices.
  • It allowed me to understand making all three of the products has an expensive fee in order for them to look professional.
  • I was able to get accurate prices for all the resources and materials which gave me an average price of how much it would cost me to produce all three products.
  • Slide of questionnaire questions-
  • Questionnaire questions-
  • By doing this questionnaire, it helped me to understand what Rihanna's target audience want and allowed me to change my products according to these responses.
  • This proves that this research was useful because it will impact my media production massively as it will make sure I do my work correctly.
  • Bibliography of the websites I used-
  • The websites used to help me in task 1, task 2, task 3, task 4 and task 5's research.
  • Appendix of questionnaire questions-
  • How often do you watch music videos, which artist music video do you watch most?, what genre do you like to see in a music video?, what is the most important feature found on a digipak?, what theme do you like to see in your digipak?, why do you find digipak's interesting?, what is the most important feature on an advert?, why do you find magazine album adverts engaging?, which magazines do you read?, how often do you read magazines?
  • Appendix of focus group questions- on go animate
  • Appendix of audience research questions- on go animate
  • Appendix of interview questions- on go animate

UNIT 3: RESEARCH TECHNIQUES TASK 6

To collate, evaluate and summarise my research methods, I have come to the conclusion that quantitative research is an extremely useful method of research to find out information where it is number based. I was looking for viewing figures on music videos online and this was a success. From using this type of research I found out information such as the average YouTube views per video which is 8,332. I also found out that the most viewed YouTube category is the Entertainment category, with How-to and Style category coming second. By using quantitative research I was able to find out the most viewed YouTube videos, 'See You Again' was rated the top most view YouTube video. All this information helped me because I can see what is popular and what people like. It will also help me to ensure I don't copy other artists music videos but I can use similar aspects that made them so famous and popular. In Task 1 B I used qualitative research to find out different views and attitudes, reviews, responses and fan views towards music video, album artwork and magazine album adverts. This is a worded based research method therefore I found out peoples attitudes and opinions towards some of the most viewed YouTube videos. Further, I found out peoples responses to album artwork and their thoughts about digipaks. From finding out fan views on popular artists magazine album adverts, such as Rihanna, this will help me in my research.

In Task 2, we had to work in groups and me and my partner produced a questionnaire for evidence of quantitative research. We got 23 responses from people who have answered our questionairre and from the responses we found out a lot of useful information. One question we asked was "Which Artist's Music Video's Do You Watch The Most?" and 17 people out of 23 answered Rihanna.

In Task 3, we were asked to define our artist, Rihanna's, target audience for her music videos, digipak, magazine album advert. After looking at different tables such as the Demographic and Psychographic tables, we noticed that Rihanna's target audience is 13-25. In the demographic table we classed Rihanna as being under group E because her target audience fit into this category the best. In the Psychographic table, her target audience fit into the group Aspirers as well as Explorers because they are both acceptable. In Task 3 B this was where we were asked to classify Rihanna's audience and produce an audience profile for Rihanna's target audience which consisted of economic characteristics along with her social characteristics. From this audience profile we found out that Rihanna's typical target audience live at home and are around 17-18 and can drive therefore they can drive themselves to purchase magazines, digipaks etc. They enjoy reading because they are at the age where they have a lot of school/college work which requires them to read however, they have free tim to frequently read magazines to find out information about Rihanna's upcoming concert dates and new albums.

In Task 4, we were looking at Rihanna's competition and complete a competitor analysis. We choose Beyonce as her most suitable competition as they are very similar artists and share some of the same characteristics when it comes to their music videos, digipaks and magazine album adverts. They share the same target audience which is why they have such a big competition as they are competing for their target audience. Another one of Rihanna's competitors that we discussed was Ariana Grande because like Beyonce, Ariana and Rihanna are very alike with the way they sing and their music videos and digipaks. Also, they both produce their own songs and music videos which is one of their similarity's. In the second task, I was asked to textually analyse one of Rihanna's music videos, digipaks and a magazine album advert and compare it to one of each of Beyonce's who is Rihanna's competitor. This was useful and helpful information to find out so that I know the similarities and differences between Rihanna and Beyonce's music videos and accompanying products.

In Task 5 we had to produce three different tables of which were for the completion of a music video, digipak and a magazine album advert. In each table we had to explain the uses of each of these; personal, talent, finance, supplies, facilities and location. Then we had to research and find out the costs for each of those things when making either a music video, digipak or magazine album advert. Furthermore, we had to go on to assessing the viability of each of those resources and explaining why they were viable or not. This has helped me to understand the uses of each resource in the making of one of the three products and their costs and how there are a lot of different aspects to thing and plan before making a music video, digipak or a magazine album advert.

UNIT 3: RESEARCH TECHNIQUES TASK 5

This is me and my partner's table for the completion of a Music Video

Resources

Use
Costs
Viability

Personnel

Each of the resources is being calculated in the duration of one whole week in order to complete the production of the music video.

This is the people, who are involved within the main production of the music video; these are the individuals, which are helping within the production of the filming and creation.
A Camera for 7 days
= 1 day £250
= 7 days £1,750

Camera Operator for 7 days.
= 1 days £200
= 7 days £1400.

Graphic Visualisation & Designer
= £200-£600 for 1 day.

This is very viable, this will work out to become a good plan, due to the camera making the shoot to increase the workings of the music video. However if the camera team do not make the shoot there will be a standby team on site in case.

Talent
This is the talent, which needs to be put into the music video, such as the casting stages of the production.
Casting Session
= £100-£500

Casting from the project manager
 = £100-£500

Dancers
= £500- £1,000

This is very viable as the crew and the talent are on mass as their needs to be many dancers and the   training in order to produce a good construction of the movements on the set. However if there are any issue with the cast and the talents there will be understudies for those who do not have the ability to contribute.

Finance
To budget the music video and make sure you have a limit of what to spend.  Money could be coming from the recording company however, some people pay for it themselves.
The production company/record label will, invest and put £800,000 - £100,00,00, as funding for the main music video for Rihanna. This will include all the resources needed like cameras, lighting, set, outfits etc.
This is very viable because the record company/production company have a huge interest in Rihanna therefore they will be enthaustic in producing her video.

Suppliers
They are supplying the personnel with equipment for the making for the music video.
Wardrobe (costume) =
Film Equipment
1 day = £500 - £1500
3 days = 1500 – 4,500

Arri Lighting
=1 day= £500 so 7 days= £3,500

This is viable as the suppliers are on the set and are reliable due to their jobs on set.

Facilities

This is the facility that are on set to help with the music video production.

Trailers
= X 1 £4,995.00
= X4 £19,980.00

Food
1 day = £100 -£300
3 days = £300 - £900

Land Used (Studio)
= 1 day £350
= 1 week £2,450

This is viable, as every facility has been duplicated with contacts in case this does not go to plan, however all of the facilities are pre booked and confirmed on a regular basis.

Locations
This is the resources and the planning of the total location of the shoot and where the music video will be shot, this is going to be in an open area to increase the effective moments in the music video.
Location Planner (from a project manager)
= £100- £500.

The location is available for use due to the planning however there will definitely be a back up location in the event of any disruption.

This is me and my partner's table for the completion of the a CD Digipak

Resources

Use
Costs
Viability

Personnel

This is over the course of 3 days of production.

These are the people helping with the making of the CD digipak and the artwork for Rihanna’s CD.
Camera man / Photographer
1 day = £5,000
3 days = £15,000

Printer Man
= £50,000 for the final print of all images and pages

Writer
= £1,000

IT Designer / Graphic Design Support
= £5,000

Publisher
= £2,000
Product Designer (who will create the model of the advert plastic cover.
= £10,000.

This is viable as the photographers will be one site the whole day, meaning that they will be there in the shoot, if not there is a back up team for this production to occur.

Talent
This is the talent, which is put into the digipak, who is Rihanna herself as she is the only feature. This could be an artist due to drawings, which could feature.
Rihanna (fee).
= £50,000.

Artist
= £6,000

This is viable due to Rihanna featuring in her own CD digipak and album.

Finance
This is the finance, which is used in order to make and pay for the production of the digipak.
The record label will be financing the production of the digipak, following with their own producers.
= £900,000
This is very viable as the record label have a guanteed success will Rihanna and the funding of the CD, therefore they would not dismiss this opportunity.

Suppliers
This is the supplies needed for the production of the digipak.
CD Covers on Mass
=£2,000

Paper for Poster/ Pages
= £1,000
This is viable as the suppliers are on the set and are reliable due to their jobs on set, the products for this will be ordered in advance and confirmed.

Facilities
This is the facility that is on set to help with focusing and the production of the digipak itself.
Computers
= £15,000

Lighting
= £5,000

Backdrops
= £3,000
Electrical generator
= 15,000 (3 days)

Computer Software
= £10,000
All of the facilities are essential for the production of the CD digipak production, meaning that they   need to be present in making.

Locations
This is the cost of the location for the production of the CD digipak.
Location Planner (from a project manager) In a photo-shoot studio/ and music video set and backdrop.
= £100- £500.
The location does not move meaning this is viable, however if the council or studio owners dismiss the location usage, the production will have to be on hold therefore the location has to include a back up.

This is me and my partner's table for the completion of the Magazine Album Advert

Resources

Use
Costs
Viability

Personnel

This is the people involved within the making of the magazine album advert, they are the individual people who work together in a team who have specific jobs each to create the magazine album advert.
A high end printer= £1,133.28

A printer operator= £9.57 an hour so for 1 days work= £66.99 and 3 days= £200.97.

Graphic design team= £200-£600 for 1 day so for 3 days= £600-18000.

This is very viable because you will work out a plan before hand so that everything is scheduled in order for the magazine album advert to be successful. However, if theres a problem with the printer or any of the people, there will be a back up team on site to fill in for them.

Talent
This is the talent in the magazine album advert, this includes the different stages taken to produce a magazine advert, which are a lot!
Make-up artist= £150 for 1 day so for 3 days= £450.

This is very viable and will work because Rihanna is extremely successful which means she has an incredible singing voice which is her talent, this is why people will buy her album and she is well-know therefore their doesn't need to be an explanation of what her talent is on the album advert because she is very known. Yet, if there are any problems with the crew or Rihanna, then their will be solutions to the problems

Finance
This is to give the album advert a budget so that they have a limited amount of money to spend on it. They could get money from Rihanna's recording company or from Rihanna herself as some artists prefer to do this.
One full page in full colour in a magazine= £1,155, however if the recording company are going to pay for this, they would only contribute= £1,000-£2,000 and this will include all the resources needed to make the magazine album advert plus the magazine advertising.
This is really viable because many artists have payed for it themselves because they can afford to. Yet, this means she has to produce it all herself where as if the recording company put a huge interest into it then Rihanna will be grateful.

Suppliers
This is the people who supply the resources and materials for the making of a magazine album advert such as; printing paper, Rihanna's wardrobe.
Rihanna's wardrobe= This doesn't have an exact price because it is unknown.

However a normal usage of a wardrobe would include the price of £500 for one week.
This is really viable because the suppliers are responsible for all this equipment which means Rihanna can focus on making it perfect and doesn't need to worry about picking any of her wardrobe out etc.

Facilities
This is the help and facility who are on set in order to help out if anything or anyone needs helping in the production of the magazine album advert. They provide things like trailers for cast members, studios used to film, food and drink for the staff and the artist, Rihanna.
Food and drink for 1 day= £100-£300 so for 3 days= £300-900, Studio space used= £350 for 1 day so for 3 days= £1,050
This is very viable because their is replacements for every facility on site therefore incase something breaks or isn't working, their is another one to use. Although all the facilities are tested regularly and booked before hand which means no problems should occur.

Locations
This is location for the filming for the magazine album advert and the place it is all put together including all the resources and the planning. This is going to take place in an empty studio because this suitable for Rihanna's style.
Location planner= £100- £500 for 1 day so for 3 days= £300-£1,500
This is viable because the studio is booked beforehand and paid for so you have put a deposit on it therefore if any problems happen you won't get the deposit back however, this deposit ensures the studio is ur's to use and no-one else can use whilst you are. There would've been a lot of planning that went into planning the location because its extremely important and an essential part of the production of a magazine album advert. Although, there is a back up studio location if the location isn't available for any reason.

UNIT 3: RESEARCH TECHNIQUES TASK 4

MARKET RESEARCH A

Competitor Analysis

For the competition analysis, we have chosen Beyonce because we feel she is most suited. Rihanna is a well-known successful, high classified artist who's target audience are females between the ages of 13-25 and this is the same for Beyonce as she is also a high regarded artist in the music industry. For their music videos, CD Digipaks and magazine album adverts, both artists compete in order to gain popularity from their target audience and sales. Beyonce, unlike other competitors, has the same theme as Rihanna in her music videos and they perform the same way. They have a lot of similarities however, they are not identical artists which are why they are competitors.

Picture of Beyoncé

Furthermore, Ariana Grande is another one of Rihanna's competition. She is a female artist who also produces her own songs, music video and albums. Her target audience is females aged 12-25. Unlike Rihanna, Ariana Grande has a more girly theme to her music and style and her songs and albums all appear bright, colourful and happy. This conveys Ariana's personality because this is what she is like. Even though they are both successful and hard working artists, they both have a different target market audience for their music and accompanying materials.

MARKET RESEARCH B

Textual Analysis

Music Video

Beyonce is a female artist, who airs her own songs and music video, this is the most appropriate competition for Rihanna due to the target audience being the same ages and the female orientation around both of the artists. They target women and most of their fans look up to both of them as role models and idols as they are both inspirational singers. Beyonce is one of the most successful female artists along with Rihanna. Beyonce, however shows and presents her music videos, in a dark way, this is the same for Rihanna in some of her videos, although like her song "Loud" this conveys a girly approach to this type of song, however her song 'Diamonds' is conveyed in a more dark mysterious way.

Both of the artists have their own focus in their music video, meaning that they are the main set and figure in their music videos, this is to convey the importance in their song to make sure the audience knows who is singing and making the song meaningful. Both of the artist's have featured in each other's and various other artists songs together such as the song 'Cry'. This video conveyed both artists attitudes, behaviours and themes. Both of the artist's separately have their own style and theme which they convey through their music videos as they feature in all of their own music videos unlike other artists who have actors featuring in their videos telling the story of the song. Both of the video's below show, different themes, with Rihanna showing a more colourful moving video and Beyonce showing a black and white video to show the seriousness of the meanings of the song which she is singing.

Magazine Album Advert

Both of these artist are in competition with each other, due to how successful they both are, meaning that their adverts in magazines need to be appealing to the public in order to covey the importance, of the music video. Both of the artists album adverts are presented on one page in a magazine, the magazines are usually popular from the readings of females such as, "OK" magazine as this targets the specific target market, more specifically, "Top of the Pops and Teen Vogue", as this meets the target market for the teenagers ages 15-18 which Rihanna and Beyonce will attract in the magazine. Both of the adverts are very eye catching and appealing to the eye, in order to gain the attraction in a magazine, to focus of the main album advertisement.

When analysing the competition advert which appear in the magazines, it is clear to see that they contain the similar colour theme, of black and white photo's, this conveys the important and seriousness of both of the artist and how they work, which can reflect on their music and personalities. However the Rihanna advert appears to me more eye catching, due to the words being visual in the colour red, which shows the important words found on the album, meaning that it includes the relevent information of the album's name and the songs featured in the particular album. The fonts, which are used to write both of their names are in different distinctive font, which shows their copy and significants of their important names.

Image result for rihanna magazine album advert

Digipak's

Beyonce and Rihanna have a similar style within their music video however, their digipak's are produced with differences. Beyonce's digipak is more dull compared to Rihanna's bright and vibrant one. Beyonce uses a black and white effect to emphasis her on the digipak. She does this to get seen clearly and stand out. Rihanna's digipak is colourful and consists of one large image of her. This attracts customers because they can instantly see that this is Rihanna's CD because of the digipak. Also, Beyonce's digipak includes a load of writing which include her song lyrics, a bit about her as an artist etc. Where as Rihanna's doesn't have any writing on it, just photos. The are both successful artists therefore they have a big competition within the CD digipak world yet they both produce completely different digipak to try and stand out to their competitors.

UNIT 3: RESEARCH TECHNIQUES TASK 3

AUDIENCE RESEARCH A

As Rihanna is a female orientated artist the main target audience would be to look at females over males, and the younger audience. When looking at a demographic table and analysing this we have come to the overall conclusion that our target audience fits into group A, as the audience is students, unemployed and ages from 13 - 25, this is aimed for those who have not yet gathered their own income or employment, however some of the chosen category may have gone into employment. As this is a narrow audience the demographic table was good to decide and find the right category to aim the audience to. Another form of research and audience classification table would be to look and analyze a psychographics table, in the category of 'Aspirers', as this is mainly targeted to the young ages who look up to others around them in the society. However this also apply's to the category of the 'Explorers', as they seek individualism, which is something which Rihanna produces and conveys within her music video, album artwork (digipaks). Audience classification is very important when trying to find and aim a product or theme to a particular target audience, without this the music from the artist Rihanna would not sell or be a hit for anyone in particular. The demographic is a very important factor to consider in this as, this is a set of division of the population and the divise of the people in it, as the demographics are used to divide the society up in six group, this is to an advantage as you have the ability to interpret the specific audience which the Rihanna video, artwork and magazine would be aimed at and appropriate for. The decision of the audience target group can also be determined due to the behaviour, attitude and personality of different people, this is combined into a general figure of society separation.

From looking at the demographic table, we have classed Rihanna's target audience as being under the group E (unemployed, students, pensioners, casual workers) because they are the most suited. Rihanna is more targeted at the younger generation and her music could relate to students going through the same or similar issues she sings about in her songs.

From looking at the psychographics table, we have decided that Rihanna's target audience are Aspirers because she is really into her fashion and appearance therefore this would attract people who are also materialistic and orientated to their image and appearance. As well as this, they could also classify as explorers because they value difference and adventure. Rihanna has her own twist to her style and her songs compared to other artist therefore this would fit her target audience well.

MARKET RESEARCH B

This is a profile of someone who fits into the criteria of the type of person to view a Rihanna music video and accompanining promotional materials....

I am Sarah and I am a 17 year old student in sixth form studying Business and Media. I live at home with my family which consists of my mother, my father and my two sisters. I drive and own a car therefore I am able to go out by myself. I am currently single but my previous boyfriend was really into Rihanna's music as well as me. We used to go to her concerts all the time and I have a load of her CD digipak's and magazine album adverts stuck on my wall. In my spare time about once or twice a week, I will buy a Teen Vogue magazine for myself and my sisters as we are all into Rihanna and I will frequently find album artwork for Rihanna along with information about her upcoming concerts, tours and CD release dates. However, I am quite busy as my hobbies include reading, dancing and singing. I am girly yet, I also like Rihanna's dark mysterious side to her music. When I get home from school, I like to watch Rihanna's YouTube music videos and my favourite song of hers is "Stay".

UNIT 3: RESEARCH TECHNIQUES TASK 2

PRIMARY RESEARCH A

This is me and my partner's questionnaire produced on Google forms for evidence of quantitative research. We have had 23 responses to our questionnaire.

PRIMARY RESEARCH B

I will be doing a focus group individually on creating a music video. I will be showing Rihanna's 'Diamonds' music video to a group of 5 girls aged 13-19. By having people watch this music video I hope to get the right feedback and information from the focus group about what they like to see in it and various other things. I started off by showing the focus group a 30 second clip from Rihanna's music video then asked them questions to discuss and find out their opinions.

Secondly, this is me and my partners audience panel where we asked 4 people, 2 girls and 2 boys between the ages of 16-19 what they thought about one of Rihanna's popular magazine album adverts. This was much like a discussion where they casually answered questions about the magazine album advert and discussed this between themselves and shared their different opinions.

Lastly, this is my partners individual interview in which she interviewed Brandon who is 17 year old student.

UNIT 3: RESEARCH TECHNIQUES TASK 1

SECONDARY RESEARCH A

QUANTITATIVE

http://tubularinsights.com/average-youtube-views/ = "How many views does a Youtube Video get on average?"

This is useful when producing a music video because you can see the average youtube views per video, which is 8,332. This means that on average a Youtube video gets 8,332 views which is a lot that means a huge amount of people look at a Youtube.

This shows the average views per video by their Youtube category. The most popular is Entertainment, then How-to and Style then the rest follow. This means that the average count for videos within the entertainment category was the most popular and get the most views. When we make a music video this will be very helpful because we know that entertainment is most popular category.

This shows the list of the most viewed Youtube videos. The first one is Gangnam style and it has 2673 million views and was uploaded on the 15th July 2012. This shows us the most popular Youtube video and the 39 other top most viewed Youtube videos. We can use this when making a music video to get an idea about what viewers want to see and what they like.

This is a screenshot showing the most viewed Youtube video, which is Gangnam Style. This will help me when producing a music video a long with a Digipak and a magazine album advert because I will look at Gingham styles music video and their accompanying promotional materials and see what they did and the reasons as to why it was so popular over 4 years.

TASK 1: PRIMARY RESEARCH TASK B
