UNIT 57: PHOTOGRAPHY Research 1- Advertising

This is my detailed report on how Advertising is used to communicate ideas


Advertising photography is a way to communicate and advertise various different products in an effective image. It covers different genres for example; food, fashion, still life etc. It came around in the 1850's and has changed since then to using digital cameras editing the photos rather than just taking a black and white photo.

This is a newspaper article about the winner of the Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year competition. It was awarded to Mark Denham. It was quoted that "Its a scene that gives you the smell of the bakery before the ovens are turned on" therefore the judges, Rayner and nearly 40 other judges all agreed that this photo was outstanding and a work of art. This type of photography is made to try and sell or advertise a product or a service. Mark has designed this photo so that he captures the flour and to entice the judges. The actor in this photo may be famous or be a good chef and usually photographers do this to try and get customers to buy the product or service because f this celebrity of well-know person in the image because customers want what the celebrities have or are doing. Morgan Lockyer is another advertising photographer, one of the UK's leading. He has worked with loads of well-known and international businesses such as; Barclays, Fuji, Virgin and more! Because of his distinctive photography skills he creates outstanding photos however compared to some advertising photographers, a lot of Lockyers work is positive and happy work with the odd Aviva campaign.

This is a book about the secrets and tips of the best advertising photography trades. It involves the worlds best advertising photographers, copywriters and directors and how they create such professional and amazing photographs. There are many different books on advertising photography to professional secrets, how to be successful in the industry, a straight-forward guide and the comparison between new and old advertising photographers. There is a huge amount to know about capturing an advertising photo and you need to plan before you just go ahead and take the photos because there are various different aspects to it, you need to also think about the marketing side of the photo, would this product sell if it had this specific person in it, would customers get drawn into the photo because of this colour or angle etc. Jonathan Knowles is a advertising photographer who shoots various photos such as liquid beauty which is highly popular in the advertising world. It is a unique way of advertising and is one of the most popular type of advertisement to advertise a product by using liquid beauty.

This is a documentary about Sam Robinson who is an Advertising and Lifestyle Photographer. Sam is an extremely influential, successful and famous photographer as he shoots for some of the biggest brands such as; Visa, Adidas, Vodaphone, Disney Nike, Skype and Sony. He states that "the stuff you enjoy, the stuff you really are into is what drives the commercial work" this means that if you enjoy photographing a particular aspect of product it really drives you to get a victorious photograph. Also, he travels around the world to get different perspectives and different settings for his photographs, this gets you known about as you are shooting in a variety of different areas. Advertising doesn't have to always be a photograph of a still object of service, the photographer could capture a mid air shot, food being processed, which means the photographer has to be extremely quick and efficient when taking advertising photos.

This is a magazine where they aspire to get across the product of service they are promoting and shoot what the customer want. It is called PHOTOSHOOT magazine and they specialise in public relations photography and marketing and commission photoshoots to promote an organisation, product or service. They work closely with the organisation getting to know the product and make a brief ensuring they know enough about the product, service to make sure they get the message across in their photo. Photographers will usually get hired by a business to take photos of their new product or service to promote it and to get it across to people. There are thousands of companies which do this but they need to ensure they get the right message the customer have asked for because the customer will pay them a lot to do this.
