UNIT 57: PHOTOGRAPHY- What is Aperture?

'The size of of the opening in the lens when a picture is taken'
-When  you hit the shutter release bottom of your camera a hole opens up that allows your cameras image sensor to catch a glimpse of the scene opening to capture

Aperture measure in "f-stops"/f-number

-Moving from one f-stop to the next doubles or halves the size of the amount off opening in your lens and the amount of light getting through
-Depth of field is= the amount of your shot that will be in focus
Shallow depth of field= small part in focus
Large depth of field= large part in focus

-Some styles of photography requires large depths of field (and small apertures)

Large aperture - portrait photos f2.8 to f5.6
Small aperture - landscape photos f16 to f32

UNIT 57: PHOTOGRAPHY- Fine Arts Photography

Fine Arts Photography is.....

Photography which is created in accordance with the vision of the artist as the photographer.




These are some examples of black and white and colour fine art.
Scott Mead is a key fine arts photographer. He studied photography under the photographers; William Eggleston and Emmet Gowin in 1970. In 2009 he let photography have a back seat whilst he was had an investment banking career. He then decided to go into his attic and retrieve all his old cameras, work, lenses etc. Then in 2010 he opened his first solo exhibition called "Looking Back" at Hamilton's Gallery London and were sold at auctions and to collectors and all the funds he made were given to the Great Ormond Street Children's Charity which was the hospital which one of his children were cured of a life threatening disease many years ago. Some of Scott's photographs are hanging in Andover, Massachusetts curated through the Addison Gallery of American Art.

Currently he is working on a number of projects. One of which is his exhibition that is coming up "Silent Moments" which consists of recent work he's done and a book and a exhibition called "Above the Clouds" which is about images and thoughts on his life, travel and his overall journey.

Hi Saul, how are you enjoying your new lifestyle compared to being an average 17 yr old back in your neighbourhood?

Hi, well i guess you can imagine, one day I'm stuck figuring out the pie of 54 and the next I'm standing next to David Keriy. My life has just changed so drastically in such a short period of time its really amazing and I'm so fortunate for everyone who has supported me along my journey and i cant express how nice and friendly all the photographers, models and other people I've worked with have been.

As a child, what did you want to be?

I always wanted to be a professional skater, i was influenced a lot by supreme as its a skating company and i used to buy a lot of there garm's because the fact it was to do with skating. Little did i know supreme came back in fashion 5 years and i started buying all there garm's, along with other brands which were associated with skating, like palace and stussy.

Would you say you have a unique fashion style or do you follow the crowd?

Umm, i would say i have my own style and i wear clothes i like rather than what other people like or dislike. However, i like the same street wear culture as most of my friends yet my own style is different to theirs. 

One of your favourite jobs so far has been....?

Wow, thats a hard one as i have experienced and worked with some of the most amazing people and companies in the world. My favourite has got to be Givenchy Spring Summer 2016. It was one of my most recent jobs and honestly the experience was nothing like i have ever experience before, it was incredible, actually indescribable. I would encourage all young models to seek their career as the older you get you start to appreciate and acknowledge actually how extraordinary the materials and work the fashion designers are. I remember working with Giorgio Armani and being the youngest there, it was extremely frightening obviously but i kept thinking how many people get to experience this once in a lifetime opportunity. 

Your celebrity crush?

Kendall Jenner, she's hot. I'd love to get the chance to meet her one day. Or Kylie Jenner of course! When i was on a shoot once in LA i saw Pia Mia and i was looking everywhere for Kendall and Kylie  but they were no where to be found!!

What does your everyday attire consist off?

Every day it varies, it also depends where I'm going. I'll give you a breakdown of all my possible outfits hehe... If i was going out with my friends, i'd probably throw on my camo print supreme pants with my Kate Moss tee with either a box logo prime sweat over or a supreme x north face jacket. Whereas, if i was going out for a night out i would put on my APC shirt with Levi jeans- there the comfiest! Wait how could i forget my shoes... My live and die pair are my Bape x undefeated superstars although i do love my supreme x Jordan's.

The best advice i was ever given was...?

To believe and pursue in your dreams and they will come true. My Grandma first told me that after i didn't get my first casting, Calvin Klein and I've always kept that bottled away in my head.

How are you copying with the girl attention?
Haha, its nice i guess sometimes, it depends really because when I'm out with my friends and people recognise me its sometimes overwhelming for my friends and we just want privacy sometimes however, when I'm doing appearances and there are girls waiting outside cheering me, who wouldn't love it ;) hehe

What are your goals as a model?
I would like to grow as a model and do more jobs for incredible clients as i love doing what i do and hope to continue doing it for ages. I would also love to start up my own show company once in my life!

Who has been your favourite photographer to work with?
That is a hard one! I have worked with some of the most amazing photographers over the past few years but my favourite has to be Harry Rewed because he completely inspired me to grow as a model. He is one of the funniest men I've met in my life and the moment he walked into the room he just lit up the room and everyone had a smile on their faces. I was told before i met him that he has inspired a lot of people previously and fills the room with laughter and to my surprise he honestly did! I remember just after we finished a shoot he came up to me and gave me this huge hug and said well done that was brill mate you've done yourself proud and it has just stuck with me all these years just because it just shows after having the longest and tiring 13 hour day he was full of praise and joy and it made me feel so good about myself.

Focal Points- doesn't have to be big to do its job. Colour can always affect the image because if its a bright colour it will draw attention to that object because of its luminous colour. They also create visual tension however, if you have two or more focal points they produce more powerful images because the viewer doesn't no now what to look at first
