UNIT 29: Introduction to Music Video Production

8 different elements that Andrew Goodwin's theory states
-Have a link between visuals (the video) and lyrics
-Have a link between visuals (the video) and music (beat)
-Have certain genre characteristics
-Have intertextual references (links to culture, society, references to news)
-Contain notions of looking (people looking at artist) (showing who is the centre of attention and everything revolves round the main person)
-Show voyeurism (sexual pleasure from watching others)
-Include demands of the record label (governed by the record label) (artist may want to do diff to the record label because they may not want to take the risk by alienating part of the target audience)
-Whether the video is performance, narrative or concept based (most music videos are narrative)

Example- "Lovegame" By Lady Gaga
-"Involves some heavy touching, yeah". A few dancers have body contact with Gaga when she sings this line
-The dancing, editing, lip-synching, camera movements are also in time with the beat of the music
-Genre: dance, pop, electro, Genre characteristics: dancers, unique clothing, bright colours, the video focuses on the single not the album
-The opening copies a film type opening, it also shows the label company so the views can identify which company the video belongs to
-All characters in the video are constantly looking at Gaga to show her popularity, people have an obsession with her and how attractive she is
-Represents her sexuality as she is surrounded by men showing she gets males attentions as well as showing she is an object of sex, but she also kisses a girl to show she is openly bisexual
-They use close up on Gaga, this is evident of both male and female gaze on her and her dancers

Example of my own chose of song- "Work Out" By J Cole
-When he says "a one night stand" he puts one finger up to show the number one which links the two together, also when he says "here for one night" he also does this to emphasis the one in the music video, the title of the song 'work out' relates to the video because they are playing basketball and doing exercise, lyrics talk about a girl and he is singing the lyrics to the girl, filmed outside to emphasis working out and exercise

-The beat is quick fast therefore the shots are quite jumpy and change to the beat, his hand actions correlate with the beat, the lip-synching also is in time with the beat
-Genre: RnB, HipHop, rap, Genre characteristics: sports, basketball, romance
-Focuses on the black and mixed race society and community, women are staring at him to show he is the centre of attention

-The girls wave to him showing he is the videos attention, the individual girl constantly looks at him whilst he is lip-synching, everyone at the party is singing along with him, one girl is facing him staring at him to show her attention is only on him, at the party he is constantly staring at her singing and she is looking back at him, this shows the isolation form them to the rest of the people at the party

-There is women in bikinis and small pieces of clothing however there is no nudity or anything innapropriate as the record label wouldn't allow this, there are close ups of him to show who the music video is about, women are attracted to him but he likes the one girl he is speaking to, shows women cleavage which is pleasuring to target audience as these are men

-It is narrative as it tells a story about him wanting this girl
