UNIT 57: PHOTOGRAPHY Moodboard

This is my moodboard of my chosen photographers photographs, Adriana Zehbrauskas. I am going to be attempting to copy her style and the way she photographs. In my photos I will try to replicate the styles Adriana uses and the way she takes her photos by using colour to enhance a photo and by telling a story through my photographs. By doing this we will be able to understand the message and emotion the photo gives off.

UNIT 57: PHOTOGRAPHY- Research People and Places

Adriana Zehbrauskas
Adriana is a Brazilian photography who is based in Brazil. Her work mainly focuses on issues related to religion, the aftermath of the drug wars in Mexico, migration as well as the daily life of unfortunate communities. However, she has galleries of a variety of different things such as the beach life in Mexico. Adriana is one of the three photographers who have been featured in the documentary "Beyond Assignment" therefore this means her work is too an extremely high standard and really focuses on her images. From her photos, you can tell she uses a lot of symmetry and uses the a square grid to place certain objects in certain places in line. She captures various bright shots to others being dull and emphasising how harsh and bad living conditions are for some less fortunate. She really focuses on colour and her style is enhancing the colours in her shoots to make them stand out and give a vibrant feel to each individual photograph. In each shot there is really one main focus whether it be small or big and her style is using one main colour focus as well, to emphasis the main focus of the image. She mainly focuses on people and their lives depending on what they are doing and where they live but she focuses on peoples daily lives.

Thatcher Hullerman Cook
He is also a documentary photographer who is based in New Hampshire and South Carolina. He usually photographs primarily refugees and other people affected by war, natural disasters, economic upheaval. The style of Cook's photos are mainly emotional because they all have sad stories behind them or portray a sad feeling. Thatcher works with the individuals before capturing the photographs to get to know the stories behind the person and situation occurring. By travelling to specific areas, you get a different emotion from each photo because of their surroundings. He looks at lighting extremely carefully and makes sure his lighting reflects an emotion in the images. Some images are bright to emphasis the colours in the background or to single out a specific main object in the image. He doesn't set up a specific frame and shoot, he holds the camera and lets the image walk in front of the camera. His images are shot in colours to emphasis the surroundings and the life of the people he is shooting. By using colour he can emphasis the skin colours of the people in the photos, most are black african people in poor conditions and by using colour this makes the photos more emotional. Also, by using colour he can change the brightness and saturation to alter the colours to enhance them or make them more dull. His photos give off a powerful and shocking feeling to them, this is due to the positioning of the objects in the images, the lighting and colour. All these things can drastically change an image.

Eric Michael Jackson
Jackson is a documentary photographer based in Shanghai, his work is focused on educating people and various other reasons and is used in news organisations, educational institutions and social welfare agencies. She specialises in portraiture and reportage photography.

Mary Ellen Mark

She is a american documentary photography born in 1940 and died in 2015. Her style of work was by photographing people who were not in the mainstream society and towards the more troubles, interesting scenes. Her work was extremely popular as it was exhibited in various galleries and museums worldwide and 18 collections of her work was published. All of her photos are put into black and white to emphasis the time these photos were taken in and the history through her photos. The style her photos are taken in is by showing not the norm, the different side of society in that time, the damaged, unstable side and that is really portrayed by her images because of the people in the images. The focus in the images really show how the peoples emotions and what life was like in that time. From her photos, we can see that the style she is trying to get across is how the other side of humanity lived in that life and the authenticity to people lives. In all her photos, she is focused on people, there may be more than one but she is always focused on people doing something unusual or interesting. The people she photographs are so natural and are only doing what they would normally do, in their everyday lives, it has not put set up or posed its real life and that is what Mary tries to portray in her images.

UNIT 51: My Magazine Double Page Spread

This is my final piece for my double page spread. It was produced on Photoshop, I included various magazine tools such as; page number, headline, intro/kicker, pull quote etc. It includes two images which I took myself then edited with Photoshop using specific tools such as the clone stamp tool, sharp edge tool, blemish tool and various other tools. I used a two tone blue background to emphasis the fact that he is a male and masculine, also I changed the font to red to emphasis the jumper he is wearing in one of the images.

Advertising:

• 2nd row, 4th Photo- I feel this photo fits the advertising photography category really well. For the reasons that it is simple and shows the purpose of the photo. It communicates across to the audience that the flowers are the main object here therefore they are advertising the flowers. The flowers are enhanced to make them look extra bright so they stand out against the bold grey carpet. The two textures of the soft flowers and the shaggy rough rug go well together as it draws attention to the flowers. This photo shows that it is advertising the flowers due to the colour contrast and the central placement.

• 3rd row, 2nd Photo- I like this photo because it is focused on the main object getting the message across straight away. It is a nice photo because it doesn't have just a plain boring background, it has other beauty products and perfumes in the background but emphasises that the perfume with the crown on that is at the front is the perfume being advertised. It is a clear and bright image. The use of white and gold arn't distracting against the black and white background which is good as it makes the perfume stand out even more. The photo shows advertisement due to the up close focusing on just the perfume.

• 4th row, 3rd photo- I like this photo because of the double image in it. This emphasises the main focus and object of the image and what is being advertised. When taking advertising photographs, the colour is really important and the more simple it is the more effective the photo is therefore i didn't choose to put in a background as this would distract the audiences attention from the image.

Documentary:

• 3rd Photo- This photo stands out to me because of the dark sides and a bright light in the middle. You can tell this is documentary as the photographer hasn't arranged or changed anything to make this image, it can be interpreted in various different ways. This photo is really special as some could interpret it as being really scary, some can interpret it as being very emotional due to the holocaust, or some come interpret it as happy because you can see the light at the end. The photo shows documentary because of the dark and gloomy sight of the holocaust. It shows the holocaust in this photo due to the loneliness of the photo.

• 2nd row, 4th Photo- I like this photo because it gives of a powerful message. It shows a couple of the people who died in the Holocaust. The photos carry on beyond the photo which reflects that there were millions of deaths in this event. The photos are in the centre of the image as they are the main focus of the image and there is no background as you shouldn't get distracted from the main focus. This fits into documentary photography really well because of the dark dull colours which reflects the event right and the positioning of the main focus.

• 20th Photo- I like this photo because its in black and white which reflects the dullness and sadness of the event, the Holocaust. It is showing the train tracks of the trains which brought people who were about to die. This photo is extremely powerful as in the background, in the distance, in the centre of the image you can see the building where they went into the gas chambers to die. You can tell this is a documentary photo as nothing has been rearranged or set up, it is a photo of the tracks which millions of trains rode on to take people to die. This photo shows documentary well due to the fact its in black and white which reflects the mood of the photo and the way you can see the shape of the building in the background gives the photo a sinister feel to it.

Fine Art:

• 1st Photo- I like this photo because it is very clear and bright and it fits into the fine art style well. The photo really emphasises the building and its special shape. The sky is all blue and covers nearly the top half of the image, this is how most Fine Art photographers plan to shoot their images using a background to cover the majority of the image and then the main image in the centre, left, right of the photo. This photo really fits in to the Fine Art photography category well which is why it is one of my favourites. When taking fine art photos i changed my camera to have the lines over the camera to make it easier to line the objects up with the line. This photo shows fine art due to the simple objects and shapes in the image as well as the placement of the building in relation to the sky.

• 3rd row, 2nd Photo- I like this photo because it really fits into the fine art style. From my research I discovered that a lot of the photos are simple and use plain contemporary colours such as blue, black, grey, red, white etc. Therefore this photo incorporates those type of colours as well as the simplicity to the photo. The sky takes up half the photo and the ground and fields take up the other half. These are how the majority of fine art photos are lay out and look like. You can tell this is fine art because of the illusion of the split image of the sky and the fields and the simple colours contrast each other.

• 20th Photo- I like this photo because it really portrays how high the mountain is, you can see the people that look like ants in various places on the mountain. I used the lines on my camera to create squares to place the sky in the top quarter of the page making it very simple as it is all blue. This image has simple and basic colours which makes it really like a fine art piece of work. The photo shows fine art due to the sky and mountains placement. It is showing nature which is highly photographed in the fine art category.
